~ Yahi to Dastoor hai duniya ka
The heavens had opened without mercy.
Rain lashed against the old tiled roof, each drop striking with a force that made the fragile house tremble. The wind howled through the cracks in the wooden windows, carrying the scent of wet earth into every corner of the tiny home.
Lightning flashed.
For a brief second, the entire room was bathed in white.
Then darkness returned.
And with it-
SMACK!
"Ahhh, ji! Dard ho raha hai. Chhod dijiye mujhe. Maaf kar dijiye. Aisi galti kabhi nahi hogi. Bhagwan ke liye, chhod dijiye mujhe!"
This had become an almost daily routine for this woman. She was Shanti Sharma, married to Ramesh Sharma.
We couldn't call this man a human. He was a monster in human skin.
"Maaf kar doon? Arre, aise kaise maaf kar doon tujhe? Tu mujhe paise dene se mana kar rahi thi. Aukaat kya hai teri? Aurat hai tu mere saamne zabaan chalane ki himmat kaise hui?"
SMACK!
The belt struck Shanti again, making her groan in pain.
Beside them were their daughters, who were trembling badly. Both of them had grown up watching this.
"Kuttiya! Do paise kama kar kya laati hai? Toh apne aap ko kahin ki maharani samajhti hai? Pairon ki jutti hai tu meri. Samjhi? Bol na, apni zubaan se bol! Varna yeh sab-haan, kheench nikalunga!"
He grabbed Shanti by the hair and pulled harshly.
"Ahhh! Jutti hoon aapke pairon ki. Maaf kar dijiye. Galti ho gayi. Aaj ke baad nahi hogi," she cried bitterly.
"Baba, chhod dijiye na Maa ko. Main aapke haath jodti hoon. Unhe dard ho raha hai. Chhod dijiye na unhe."
Gauri cried as she sat near her father's feet, but there was no impact of her words on him.
"BABA! MAA KO CHHODIYE! VARNA MAIN PANCHAYAT MEIN AAPKE KHILAAF SHIKAAYAT KAR DUNGI!"
It was Nandini, the younger daughter, whose eyes were swollen from crying. When she could no longer take it, she shouted at Ramesh.
Gauri and Shanti's eyes widened in shock.
Ramesh became furious. He let go of Shanti and grabbed Nandini by the hair.
"Saali haraamzaadi! Kya boli? Bahut zubaan chalti hai teri! Tu toh nahi bachegi aaj!"
He pulled her hair and slapped her, making her fall to the ground.
Gauri rushed towards Nandini and shielded her with her arms.
"Baba, isne aise hi bol diya. Maaf kar dijiye ise," she said, trembling badly.
"Maaf kar doon? Abhi karta hoon maaf! Saali, teeno ke teeno bojh daal diye mujhpe. Iss kuttiya se ek beta toh paida kiya nahi gaya, aur betiyon ko aurat jaisa bada nahi kiya jaa raha!"
Saying this, Ramesh picked up a bamboo stick, making Shanti horrified.
As he raised the bamboo stick to hit both his daughters-
"Yeh lijiye, saare rakh lijiye."
Shanti threw all the money in front of Ramesh.
He smirked, took the money, and grabbed her by the hair again.
"Pehle hi de deti toh teri aisi haalat nahi hoti. Par moti buddhi chalti hi pitne ke baad hai."
He let go of her hair and walked outside.
Shanti walked towards her daughters, who were crying badly. The three of them hugged each other.
They had no way out.
Shanti was a traditional woman who had always been taught never to leave her husband. Ek baar shaadi ho jaaye, toh aurat ki arthi hi uske maayke aati hai.
At first, Shanti was the one who was abused by her husband, but it wasn't frequent. However, after she gave birth to two daughters, he started abusing her every day.
Ramesh was a drunkard who played cards and gambled, and he did not take care of his family.
THAKUR HAVELI
The dining hall of the Thakur Haveli was warm with the aroma of freshly prepared food.
At the long wooden dining table sat the Thakur family, eating together. At the head of the table sat Rajinder Thakur, the eldest of the family, beside his wife, Kamla Thakur.
All the men of the family, along with Meera Thakur, were seated and having their dinner, while Nupur and Savitri served them.
Suddenly, Ranvijay Thakur broke the silence.
"Rudra, panchayat mein sab kaisa chal raha hai? Naye-naye Sarpanch bane ho, sab theek toh hai na?"
"Ji, Baba. Puri koshish kar raha hoon main," Rudra replied respectfully, making Ranvijay smile proudly.
Then he looked towards his younger son, who was eating as though he had been given food for the first time in his life.
"Dev, tumhe kya humne pehli baar khaana diya hai jo aise kha rahe ho?"
"Pehli baar? Main toh din ki chauthi baar khaana kha raha hoon. Baba, aap bhi khaaya karo. Dekho, kitne patle ho gaye ho aap. Golu-molu hi achhe lagte the."
The moment Dev finished speaking, the entire table fell silent.
Rudra closed his eyes in disbelief.
"Bilkul bhi tameez nahi hai is ladke mein. Baat karne ki bas! Bike par ghuma lo isse, wahi wapas le lunga agar isi tarah baat ki toh. Dekh rahi ho na, Savitri? Apne bete ko kuch akal nahi hai ismein. Kuch seekho Rudra se. Arre, tum Rudra ko chhodo, Vidyut ko hi dekh lo."
Ranvijay's voice grew sterner as he scolded Dev.
Dev was just about to speak again when Vidyut discreetly pinched him from underneath the table.
Rudra immediately spoke.
"Chhod dijiye na, Baba. Yeh toh naasamajh hai. Kuch bhi bolta rehta hai."
"Naasamajh? Yeh pachis saal ka ghoda naasamajh hai? Iski bike ki chaabi wapas chahiye mujhe."
"Dadiiiii!"
Dev whined dramatically, turning towards his grandmother.
Kamla immediately looked towards Ranvijay.
"Arre, kya ho gaya? Khabardaar, mere laadle se bike kisi ne li toh! Bas zyada bolta hi toh hai. Baaki toh sabse honhaar mera hi pota hai. Karobaar bhi kitne achhe se sambhalta hai. Tu chup-chaap khaana kha. Usko toka hi kyun? Woh kha raha tha, khaane dete."
Dev's face immediately lit up after hearing his grandmother's words.
He turned towards his father with a small, victorious smile.
Ranvijay glared at him.
"Maa, aapne hi bigaad rakha hai isse. Bike bhi aapne hi dilayi hai ise. Waise bhi, yeh bahut bolta hai."
Ranvijay simply shook his head.
He knew Kamla's unconditional love for Dev.
Nobody could scold Dev in front of Kamla.
And Dev knew it better than anyone.
